A POTENTIALLY dangerous worm targeting Hotmail e-mail accounts is likely to break out this week, the National Computer Virus Emergency Response Center warned on its Website.

It is the first time the center, under the Ministry of Public Security, detected a worm designed for Hotmail.

The center did not provide details of the virus but said the risks of infection are high as Hotmail is one of the most popular Web-based e-mail platforms.

"Companies should be wary of potential damage from the virus, especially when people open up Hotmail to read e-mails," the center's experts said.

Hotmail is widely used in China as users can also use accounts to log on to MSN messenger, a popular instant chat service that is now used regularly for business communication.

Experts at the center advised users to disconnect computers from the network immediately upon infection to stop it from spreading.
