host corner copy - Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Adult Rated Profiles: Why can't I kick and ban inappropriate profiles rated "Adult"?

Material beyond the adult warning page could be offensive and no host is expected to view or be subjected to such material. When suspected porn spammers are reported, their profiles are reviewed and appropriate action taken.

Bots: What do the bots do?

AgelessBots enable you to get gaveled in the rooms you want to host. However, if you enter a room that is not in your area during your five minutes entry window, you will be kicked from the room. AgelessBots also monitor language.

Peers, Community, Lifestyle, and Whatever Bots monitor language.

Connecting Problems: Why can't I connect to the chat rooms?

Try clearing your temporary internet files and removing MSN chat controls.

For Internet Explorer 4.x and later:

On the Tools menu (View menu on Internet Explorer 4.0) , click Internet Options.
On the General tab, under Temporary Internet files, click Settings.
Click View Objects.
Right-click MSN Chat Control (all versions), select Remove, and then click Yes. Reboot.

Email: Why am I receiving all this email from the host group?

Go to the main page of http://groups.msn.com/hostcorner. Under "Member Tools" on the right, click on "My E-mail Settings" Under "Messages", click on "On the Web". Click on "Save Changes".

Gavel/Emoticons: Why did my gavel and/or emoticons disappear? How do I get them back?

The chat buffer is like a temporary memory of your chat. When the buffer is full, the emoticons, including your gavel, disappear. You are actually still a host and your gavel appears to others.

To get your gavel and/or emoticons to reappear, save your chat history, then right click in the middle of the chat screen, and select "Clear all".

Histories: Why should I post my histories?

Unedited posted histories are your record of your hosting and provide a reference should there be a complaint.

All complaints are investigated. The first point of investigation is the host's unedited posted history of the chat. IF there is no history posted by the host and the complaint contains a history of the chat (which may or may not be edited), there is no recourse but to take the chatter's history as a true account of the problem. It is highly recommended that all hosts post all their histories following the instructions under Host Information.

Kick/Ban Messages: What can I use for a reason for kicking or banning a chatter?

When someone is kicked/banned the reason must never be insulting or derogatory. These reasons are listed, reviewed, and used for information. If you are in doubt as what to use as a reason, you should use "Violation of MSN Code of Conduct".

Porn Spammers: Why do I need to report any porn that I kick and ban?

When a host kicks and bans a porn spammer that takes care of one in that one room. When porn spammers are reported, they are removed and banned from the entire chat service. The same applies for "Drive-by/Whisper" spammers. If their profile is being used for advertising, which is in violation of the MSN Code of Conduct, it is turned in to be disabled.

Porn spammers do lodge complaints stating they have been kicked/banned in error. Having a record of them and either their profile URL or the message they've put into a room puts an immediate end to any complaints.

Porn Spammers: Why do I have to wait for a chatter complaint to kick/ban a porn spammer? I’d rather just “cleanup” when I first go into a room to host!

A host's role is to make everyone feel comfortable and enjoy their chat experience. When a chatter complains about a profile or a porn spammer, then, and only then, is checking a profile and taking appropriate action part of a host's role.

Scrolling/Flooding: What is scrolling? What is flooding?

Flooding:

Both examples fill the chat page and chatters should be asked not to scroll/flood. Excessive scrolling is so much, so fast, your auto-ignore function will put the chatter on ignore. Three or four repetitions of the same text is not considered excessive scrolling
