Man charged with Internet luring

Tue Jan 31 2006

A 42-year-old man has been charged with allegedly trying to lure a 12-year-old girl over the Internet to his residence, police said today.

They said the case is another reminder for parents and guardians to be mindful of what their children are doing on the Internet.

Police believe the incident happened between Oct. 14 and Nov. 27 in an MSN chat room.

The girl, concerned about the language that was being used, told her guardians about the repeated conversations and they in turn called police.

The suspect is charged with juvenile prostitution, invitation to sexual touching and Internet luring.
Police also ask anyone who has had contact with "getjiggywithjim," "Unlucky Jim" or "Lucky Jim" over the Internet to call detectives at 986-6378.

The suspect was released from custody Jan. 26 and is prohibited from being in contact with the complainant or any child under 18, unless supervised by an adult.

He had also been prohibited from using the Internet, according to a court document.

Man, 42, charged with luring girl, 12

By PAUL TURENNE, POLICE REPORTER

A 42-year-old Winnipeg man has been arrested and charged after allegedly trying to lure a 12-year-old girl to his home after meeting her in an Internet chat room.

Police believe the man -- who employs usernames like Unlucky Jim, Lucky Jim, and getjiggywithjim -- may have done the same to other children and are advising Manitoba parents to ask their kids whether they've ever chatted with someone using that name. If so, they're asked to call police at 986-6378.

When reached at his Winnipeg home yesterday, the man declined comment on his case.

Police say the man and the girl chatted online several times between Oct. 14 and Nov. 27, before the girl told her guardians that something seemed fishy.

"I guess some of the dialogue that was going on in this chat room led her to alert her guardians," said Patrol Sgt. Kelly Dennison, a spokesman for Winnipeg police.

"She did the right thing."

Dennison said there is some indication the man knew how old the girl was and that he pretended to be younger than his 42 years but still older than a teenager.

Lianna McDonald, executive director of Child Find Manitoba and cybertip.ca, said she was told the man allegedly used "a classic offender strategy" to befriend the girl before trying to entice her into numerous meetings.

"He (allegedly) used very common tactics like flattery, offering gifts, being a confidante," she said.

"Girls at this age are very vulnerable to anyone who's offering even insincere flattery.

AVOID CHAT ROOMS

"We're highly concerned and highly upset for the family and for this child victim."

McDonald said parents should not allow their children to use chat rooms, period.

"There are other ways children can communicate with their friends," she said.

She noted parents must diligently monitor their children's Internet activities and should also visit www.cybertip.ca for age-specific tips on Internet security.

James Glenn Horeczy has been charged with juvenile prostitution, invitation to sexual touching and Internet luring.

Horeczy was released on a promise to appear in court, with several restrictions. He is not allowed to communicate with children or use the Internet, cannot have any contact with the alleged victim and cannot be alone with any child younger than 18 without an adult present who is aware of the charges.

Horeczy's next court date is scheduled for Feb. 16.
