the famous msn cha firings of saturday 15 january 2005

this was sent in by a fan. apparantly this is msn's version of the apprentice's "you're fired" or maybe that other show you remember the one about you're the weakest link? some english bird hosted.

sysop cheer?

ok so back in the summer we were chatting over at this msn chat knock-off chat server called buzzen being the curious chatters that we are we snuck a peek at the profile of a chatter called "cheer" only in the big fancy letters and saw this picture cheer had posted there. we guess that cheer used to work for msn chat and must have been fired which doesnt suprise us because he was posting what he said was the msn chat managers personal information in the buzzen chatroom. the msn chatmanagers full name, telephone number, postal and municipal address in south carolina. not cool.

part2 city of marietta georgia hosts porn

we stopped by the msn chatroom AfterHours8 this morning the room was kinda dead but we found two more of the city of marietta georgia/marietta fibernet pornobots parked in there:Tanya_Reed88 and Jinxed_Woman01. we sent yet another abuse complaint and in addition cc'd an atlanta area tv station maybe the press can find out what the problem is.

we have posted the screen shots as well as the text of the email complaint:

godaddy.com: a new leader in chatroom porn spam

This summary is not available. Please click here to view the post.

city of marietta georgia hosts pornography

we here at blogging msn chat have to wonder how hard up a city must be to resort to hosting pornographic websites. perhaps marietta is still in a bind from all the money they spent searching for the runaway bride? we just dont know. do you know? anyway the city has been hosting this porn sight for at least the past year we know this because for the past year have repeatedly emailed them abuse complaints and i dont just mean these two guys you see on the trace i mean the mayor (hes the chairman of the board of the marietta fibernet) the chief of police and the city manager all to no avail. makes one wonder whats actually going on in the mayoral chambers over there.

persistent pornobot

ya know we here at blogging msn chat have to take our hats off to this whore. shes on msn chat everyday sometimes two and three times a day. when we point out (oh yeah shes known to the chatters the chat management doesn seem to have a clue) her out to a volunteer host we are given a url and told to report the profile to the msn member directory. what a cavalier attitude. now chatters are tasked with doing the hosts and msn's job for them! my question is why doesnt msn have someone to watch the chatline identifying and removing pornobots? (not to mention the chat abusers). it would be easy enough they park in every chatroom on msn. oh yeah we dig the marijuana necklace. click on each picture for a larger view.

a gavel that matters

say hello to judge colleen koller-kotelly the united states district judge in charge of the microsoft antitrust lawsuit. judge koller-kotelly and the dept of justice are monitoring microsoft's lawsuit settlement compliance. according to this news story by eric bangeman from just late last month the judge is as familar with microsofts shoddy business practices as are we chatters. hmm heres a thought why dont we contact the judge and ask her to intervene? judge koller-kotelly looks like a kindly lady she saved some geese from being slaughtered and maybe if enough chatters contact her she will save msn chat too!

msn chat best advertisement for firefox browser

Get Firefox!
ya ever notice how long it takes to open a profile using IE? then when you open the exact same profile with Firefox it opens instantly...why is that? does anyone at microsoft/msn care or realize or have enough sense to realize or care how bad they are making themselves look? i think if i was microsoft i would be making sure that my own products worked the best at least with each other dont you? now when you chat on msn and you mention it to one of their volunteer hosts they will tell you to change your (IE) browser settings to australian and profiles will load quicker. how lame is that for a work-a-round? is it too much to ask msn for their chat to work properly with their own companies browser? no i think its not. what do you think?

host corner copy - Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Adult Rated Profiles: Why can't I kick and ban inappropriate profiles rated "Adult"?

Material beyond the adult warning page could be offensive and no host is expected to view or be subjected to such material. When suspected porn spammers are reported, their profiles are reviewed and appropriate action taken.

Bots: What do the bots do?

AgelessBots enable you to get gaveled in the rooms you want to host. However, if you enter a room that is not in your area during your five minutes entry window, you will be kicked from the room. AgelessBots also monitor language.

Peers, Community, Lifestyle, and Whatever Bots monitor language.

Connecting Problems: Why can't I connect to the chat rooms?

Try clearing your temporary internet files and removing MSN chat controls.

For Internet Explorer 4.x and later:

On the Tools menu (View menu on Internet Explorer 4.0) , click Internet Options.
On the General tab, under Temporary Internet files, click Settings.
Click View Objects.
Right-click MSN Chat Control (all versions), select Remove, and then click Yes. Reboot.

Email: Why am I receiving all this email from the host group?

Go to the main page of http://groups.msn.com/hostcorner. Under "Member Tools" on the right, click on "My E-mail Settings" Under "Messages", click on "On the Web". Click on "Save Changes".

Gavel/Emoticons: Why did my gavel and/or emoticons disappear? How do I get them back?

The chat buffer is like a temporary memory of your chat. When the buffer is full, the emoticons, including your gavel, disappear. You are actually still a host and your gavel appears to others.

To get your gavel and/or emoticons to reappear, save your chat history, then right click in the middle of the chat screen, and select "Clear all".

Histories: Why should I post my histories?

Unedited posted histories are your record of your hosting and provide a reference should there be a complaint.

All complaints are investigated. The first point of investigation is the host's unedited posted history of the chat. IF there is no history posted by the host and the complaint contains a history of the chat (which may or may not be edited), there is no recourse but to take the chatter's history as a true account of the problem. It is highly recommended that all hosts post all their histories following the instructions under Host Information.

Kick/Ban Messages: What can I use for a reason for kicking or banning a chatter?

When someone is kicked/banned the reason must never be insulting or derogatory. These reasons are listed, reviewed, and used for information. If you are in doubt as what to use as a reason, you should use "Violation of MSN Code of Conduct".

Porn Spammers: Why do I need to report any porn that I kick and ban?

When a host kicks and bans a porn spammer that takes care of one in that one room. When porn spammers are reported, they are removed and banned from the entire chat service. The same applies for "Drive-by/Whisper" spammers. If their profile is being used for advertising, which is in violation of the MSN Code of Conduct, it is turned in to be disabled.

Porn spammers do lodge complaints stating they have been kicked/banned in error. Having a record of them and either their profile URL or the message they've put into a room puts an immediate end to any complaints.

Porn Spammers: Why do I have to wait for a chatter complaint to kick/ban a porn spammer? I’d rather just “cleanup” when I first go into a room to host!

A host's role is to make everyone feel comfortable and enjoy their chat experience. When a chatter complains about a profile or a porn spammer, then, and only then, is checking a profile and taking appropriate action part of a host's role.

Scrolling/Flooding: What is scrolling? What is flooding?

Scrolling:
SampleChatter says:
foolishfoolishfoolishfoolish
SampleChatter says:
foolishfoolishfoolishfoolish
SampleChatter says:
foolishfoolishfoolishfoolish
SampleChatter says:
foolishfoolishfoolishfoolish
SampleChatter says:
foolishfoolishfoolishfoolish
SampleChatter says:
foolishfoolishfoolishfoolish
SampleChatter says:
foolishfoolishfoolishfoolish
SampleChatter says:
foolishfoolishfoolishfoolish

Flooding:
SampleChatter says:
MYYYYYYY FFFFRIEND NICKNAMEWELCME

Both examples fill the chat page and chatters should be asked not to scroll/flood. Excessive scrolling is so much, so fast, your auto-ignore function will put the chatter on ignore. Three or four repetitions of the same text is not considered excessive scrolling

host corner copy - Saving, Zipping, Posting Histories

Saving, Zipping, Posting Histories

It is highly recommended to post all unedited chat histories when you host. This will be the only acceptable record of your hosting session should any questions arise at a later date.

Since your space is limited on communities, you will need to zip your histories. You will need to use a program such as WinZip (found at http://www.winzip.com). The evaluation version is free.

Saving Histories

Hosts should never edit their histories in any way. Editing will render the history invalid. **EXCEPTION** You SHOULD remove ONE line before posting! Remove "Note: MSN has detected that you are connected to this chat session from the IP address [user's IP address]"

• Right click in the center of the chat page. Choose "Select all".
• Right click in center of chat page again. Select "Copy".
• Open Word or WordPad, new document. Click on "Edit", select "Paste".
• After you have pasted the chat history into a new word document, click on file/save as and then save the history with the file name of Room Name, Time (In Eastern), and Date. For example, if you hosted in 40s main on November 30 from 3-4pm, the file name should be 40s 3-4pm 11-30-99.
• Click on the down arrow beside "save as type" and choose Rich Text Format (.rtf).
• Save the file to your desktop or a folder created to save histories in.
• Close Word or WordPad.

Zipping Histories

• Right click on desktop
• Create a new folder
• Name folder (for example 20s-30s 8-9-00 1-2 pm)
• Put saved histories in folder
• Right click on folder
• Select "Add to (name of folder).zip"

Posting

• Find the message board on the left navigation bar that holds your message thread based on your area (TheLobby, AfterHours, 20s-30s, 40s, 50s-60sPlus, CitiesEast, CitiesCentral, CitiesWest, Men4Men, Women4Women) and then your hosting nickname (i.e. 20s-30s host with the nickname of ABCD would click on “ 20s-30s _A – F”).
• Find the message with YOUR HOSTING NICKNAME.
• Click on "Add a Reply".
• In the body of the message put your Host nickname, room, date, and time you hosted.
• Click on "Attach a file to the message".
• Click on "Browse" and find the zipped file on your desktop. Highlight, open, click on “Attach this file”.
• Click on "Send".

host corner copy - Host Nicknames and Profiles

Host Nicknames and Profiles

Host Nicknames

* Host nicknames should NOT contain extended characters or symbols that alter the appearance of their nickname (i.e. ©, ®, Ã…, È, þ, ß); the bot will not recognize those characters.
* Host nicknames should not be suggestive in any way.

Changing Host Nickname

Once a host's information is entered into the bots and he/she has their password, the host will NOT be able to change their hosting nickname.

Host Profiles

* Host profiles should not be rated "Adult".

* Host profiles should be acceptable for viewing by ALL ages (no profanity, suggestive comments, inappropriate pictures, etc.)!

host corner copy - Profiles

Profiles

Hosts should only check a profile if they receive a complaint. Please do *NOT* actively search profiles.

If you see the MSN Age Verification Page/Warning Page when checking a profile, do **NOT** kick or ban the chatter.

Adult Content

If after a complaint you check a profile and it contains an adult picture or text, you should tell the chatter to change their profile rating to adult by editing their profile settings.

If they do NOT change the rating on their profile in a reasonable amount of time (10 minutes), these chatters should be reported following procedure under “Reporting” below. Include their profile URL, nickname, room, and DATE/TIME.

Kick the chatter from the room with a 15 minute ban. The reason should be: Profile to be rated Adult.

Porn Spammers with Age Verification/Warning Page

If you get a complaint about a profile, see the age verification/warning page, you may choose to go beyond that page. If you suspect this is a porn spammer, do NOT kick or ban. You may report the chatter following the procedure below. Put “Suspected Porn Spammer” in the subject line.

Note: If you agree to the age verification page, you will need to close that browser window before checking another profile, so if there is an age verification/warning page it will reappear.

Profile Criteria

This criterion applies for profiles rated “GENERAL”. Profiles rated “ADULT” are not subject to these restrictions.

Acceptable profiles:

* No adult photos in the profile
* No obscene text in the profile
* No direct links to adult material
* Adult material found only after clicking through an age verification gateway (no adult content on the gateway page itself nor on splash windows)

Unacceptable profiles:

* Adult photos in the profile
* Explicit adult text in the profile
* Direct links to adult content (no age verification)
* Links to age verification pages that also contain adult material
* Splash windows which display adult content when linking to third party sites

Inappropriate Profiles

If you get a complaint about chatter's profile content, check out the profile and if the content is in violation of MSN's Code of Conduct (pedophile, bestiality, drug use, illegal activities, etc.), please report the profile and kick the chatter from the room with a 24 hour ban. The reason should be: Inappropriate profile content – Violation of MSN Code of Conduct.

When you report an inappropriate profile, include the chatter's nickname and the MSN Profile URL following the procedure below.

Do not include any of the links on the profile; just the actual profile address.

REPORTING A PROFILE

When you go to check the profile:

* Copy/paste the PROFILE URL into the body of an email. (URL - address showing in your browser address window when viewing the profile – example below)
* Type in or copy/paste the chatter's nickname
* If you need to copy/paste the nickname because it contains special characters, highlight the chatter’s nickname, right click, and click on “Local Time”. This will put the chatter’s nickname on the chat screen so you can copy/paste it
* When reporting chatters who are removed because their profile settings need to be changed to ADULT, the email should also include the DATE/TIME and have “Re-rate profile” in the subject of the email
* When reporting chatters suspected of being porn spammers, include profile URL and nickname in the body of the email. Put “Suspected Porn Spammer” in the subject line
* Profile reports should be emailed to: Vickie5-msn@sc.rr.com

The information should be in the BODY of the email; NOT as an attachment.

MSN Public Profile URL is circled in red below:

MSN Warning/Age Verification Page below:

host corner copy - Reporting Spammers

Reporting Spammers

Spammers advertise web sites by posting their URLs (web address) in the chat room, either in open chat or in whispers.

When chatters advertise in open chat and stay in the chat room, hosts should warn them for advertising and follow the warn, warn, kick procedure.

Drive-by Spammers

Spammers that come into the chat room, advertise and leave the room immediately, should be reported in whisper to Sysop_vsi in the host room. If she is on "away" (coffee cup), report via email to Vickie5-msn@sc.rr.com. Always include the chatter's nickname, room it happened in, and complete message from the room.

Whisper Spammers

If you get a complaint from a chatter about being spammed in whisper, have them copy and paste it to you in a WHISPER; you may kick the chatter IF you report it. If the whisper is directly to the host, the spammer should be kicked. In both cases, it should be reported in whisper to Sysop_vsi in the host room. If she is on "away" (coffee cup), report via email to Vickie5-msn@sc.rr.com.

host corner copy - Threats

Threats

Please be vigilant in your hosting.

If you see threats of violence or terrorist activity, notify chat manager immediately by whispering "911" to Sysop_vsi. If there is no response, please go to HelpDesk and notify by email Vickie5-msn@sc.rr.com.

DO NOT KICK THE CHATTER OUT UNTIL SOMEONE HAS BEEN NOTIFIED!

host corner copy - Warning, Kicking, and Banning

Warning, Kicking, and Banning

*
Do NOT put chat rules macros in the room. If you need to remind guests about the rules or if someone asks, use the following: Chat guidelines: http://groups.msn.com/conduct . Hosts should read and thoroughly understand these guidelines.

*
Do not number your warnings (i.e. this is warning number one).

*
No one is to call another person racist name. This will not be tolerated and users should be kicked right away and warned if they return.

*
MSN chat rooms are open to ages 18 and above. If a chatter states they are under the age of 18 or their profile shows their age as 17 or younger, the chatter should be kicked and banned for 24 hours with the message of: Underage chatter!

*
Women4Women rooms are for females ONLY! Males entering should be politely asked to leave ONCE. If they do not leave, kick and ban for 24 hours.

*
Men4Men rooms are for males ONLY! Females entering should be politely asked to leave ONCE. If they do not leave, kick and ban for 24 hours.

*
If someone needs to be warned, your warnings to them should be in open chat, should always be polite and without any editorial comment.

*
If someone enters an MSN chat room and tells another user he/she knows where they live and are going to go and get them, please kick the user right away. If they return, warn them threats are grounds for suspension of their account and/or being banned from this server.

*
If anyone is in an MSN chat room threatening to do bodily harm to themselves, remember you are not trained in this area. Do not use whispers or go into a private room. Advise the chatter to immediately contact a local crisis line. If they continue, please report room and chatter nickname in the host room.

*
Do NOT kick or warn for typing in all CAPS. Be aware, fonts are available that appear to be in all CAPS. This also applies for all fonts and font colors!

*
URLs are not allowed in open chat. We have no way of knowing what type of site these URLs link to and advertising is not permitted. Warn for advertising twice before you kick.

*
Kick comments should be selected from the prewritten ones available. If none of them are appropriate for the kick, then you may enter the reason. Do NOT make any comment or editorialize on the kick. Keep it professional at all times.

*
If chatter(s) complain about someone bothering/harassing them in whisper, advise them to use the ignore function. Hosts cannot act on whispers. Hosts actions are limited to what is observed in open chat only.

*
Polite warnings should *ALWAYS* be used. A kick without warning is ONLY acceptable when dealing with nicknames that will get chatters kicked, scrollers/flooders, underage chatters (VERIFIED), and racist comments.

*
Chatters should not be asked to change their nickname unless it is clearly inappropriate. If the nickname is questionable, watch how they chat.

*
When someone is causing problems...follow these guidelines: warn, kick, warn, kick, warn, ban.

*
As always, it's a 15 minute ban. If the chatter returns and continues being a problem, warn again and then ban for 1 hour; next would be a 24 hour ban after one warning.

*
The 24 hour ban is reserved for the worst offenders and zipped history should be posted to your thread with the banned chatter’s nickname added to the subject line.

host corner copy - Gaveling Procedure

Gaveling Procedure

*
Your password should be written down when you receive it on your first visit to the host room and kept confidential.

*
This password is for YOU only and must be whispered EXACTLY as given to you.

*
You will use two commands for gaveling, UNSPEC and HOST.

*
To get your gavel in the host room, you will need to whisper your unique password preceeded by the command UNSPEC to BattleBot in the host room. The format is:

UNSPEC yourpassword

*
When you are ready to host a room, you will need to whisper BattleBot the command HOST, your password, and the room area you want to host. The format is:

HOST yourpassword roomarea

*
You will have 5 minutes from that point to enter the room in which you wish to host.

*
Hosts should remain in the host room while hosting! (To enter a second room: click on More Rooms, click on Join a Chat, and type in the room you want to host in.)

*
You may ONLY host in the area listed by your nickname on the host list (or listed in your Welcome Letter). If you try to go into another area with your gavel, the bot will kick and ban you.

*
If you miss your 5 minute entry window, you just have to whisper your password again to get an additional 5 minutes to enter (HOST yourpassword yourarea).

*
You must always use your host nickname, passport, and exact password in order to become gaveled.

host corner copy

some clever chatter out there has copied the host corner (msn) group and put it online...no iam not going to give you the url in case you're an msn snitch :P i will copy and paste it to here though...sort of a mirror i spose...

Host Role

*
MSN chat rooms are governed by the MSN Code of Conduct at: http://groups.msn.com/conduct. Additionally, disruptive behavior, suggestive sexual comments, profanity (even when masked), threats, insulting MSN hosts/staff and inappropriate nicknames are not acceptable. If chatters would prefer to chat without these restrictions, they have the option of creating their own chat room.

*
If you feel for any reason you cannot uphold the MSN Code of Conduct in the room you are hosting, please select another room.

*
Hosts should always abide by the MSN Code of Conduct. Violating the Code of Conduct, whether gaveled or not, will result in hosting privileges being removed.

*
Please remember that as an MSN host you not only represent yourself but also the values of MSN and its goals. Your actions as a host will reflect both good and bad on all of us. Your commitment to excellence will be greatly appreciated by all.

*
Hosts should not make sexually suggestive remarks. Doing so will imply it is acceptable to any degree and can result in totally inappropriate dialogue.

*
**NEVER** **NEVER** gavel anyone! If a chatter is a legitimate host, they will know the procedure.

*
**NEVER** **NEVER** change the topic of a room.

*
Do not direct anyone to the host room.

*
Hosts are to remain impartial at all times.

*
Do not form cliques. Your chats should be open to everyone.

*
MSN chat rooms are open to ages 18 and above. If a chatter states they are under the age of 18 or their profile shows their age as 17 or younger, the chatter should be kicked from the chat room with the kick message of: Underage chatter!

*
There are NO language restrictions in MSN chat rooms. Any attacks on chatters because of their use of a foreign language, or ethnic group should be dealt with accordingly (warnings and kicks, if necessary).

*
Please be courteous to other hosts. If you enter a room and someone else is hosting there and you haven't made arrangements in advance to host together, just quietly leave and select another room.

*
Do not question the actions of another host in public. If you observe a problem with a host, please come to the host room.

*
Two hosts may host together IF:
o
Arrangements are made in ADVANCE
o
At least one of the hosts have been hosting a minimum of 3 months

*
Hosts are **NOT** cyber police. Your main role as a host is to build a community in the room. Always be polite and professional.

*
Be an active chatter while hosting. Don't sit back and wait for problems. Room hopping looking for problems is not effective hosting.

*
When hosting, your focus is on the room you’re hosting in. Save your private conversations, gaming, etc. for non-hosting hours.

*
Do NOT go on "away" (coffee cup) in the room you are hosting. If you need to step away from your computer for just a few minutes, do so. Hosts may go on "away" in the host room.

*
To build community you should: personally greet guests when they enter, chat with the guests (do NOT just park in a room and wait for problems), keep the conversation flowing, and recognize the "regulars". If you have several chatters enter at the same time, you may use a group greeting.

*
Always encourage the use of MS/MSN and when hosting or using your hosting nickname; do not recommend the use of any other service or product.

*
If a chatter comes to you while you are hosting and asks for help in another MSN chat room, first check the host room and ask if another host is available. When unable to go to the room yourself, have the member save the chat history and e-mail it to Vickie5-msn@sc.rr.com.

*
If a member comes to you for help in a member created chat room, please direct them to seek assistance at the HelpDesk. Additionally, hosts do NOT handle problems in member created rooms.

*
Host should remain gaveled at all times in the host room.

*
Hosts should remain in the host room while hosting! (Complete gaveling procedure can be found under Gaveling in Host Information.)

*
If you need help and receive no response, whisper “911” to Sysop_vsi in the host room.
